Your Guide to Budget Travelling in Singapore

Posted by admin on 24th, 2010

I was lucky enough to be in Singapore for around 5 months and cover the entire country as much as possible. I start a series of post that would now be dedicated to the City of Singapore covering the basic aspects of food, shelter and travelling and at the end of this i would consolidate all posts and make a final post.

To start off lets talk about the Visa. All visa related queries about Singapore can be seen here at Immigrations Checkpoint Authority Website of Singapore. I was on Student pass in Singapore. Make sure always your Birth of date is same in all documents and they follow the same standard(date/month/year) in all the documents you are producing. Another important thing is with the name, the name should be the exact name as in passport. Eg: Your name on Passport would be Krishna Naga Raja Sundaram (i just made up phew) and in all your other documents(birth certificate) etc it’s just Krishna N.R.S, you will have a tough time running around getting legal documents to prove the legality of your name.

Living Expense in Singapore is High. A HDB apartment would cost you around 700-800 SGD on an average for a 2BHK depending on the location. Private apartments would cost around 1300 SGD and more. The hotels in Singapore would cost your around SGD 100+ per day. There are budget hotels in and around the geylang area (red light area of singapore) which comes less than 100 SGD/night. The best option for budget travellers/solo travellers would be Hostels(i’ll soon publish a list of hostels in singapore) which comes around 20-40 SGD for dormitory to private rooms. These hostels are usually booked always in advance as Singapore has a huge population of tourists coming in every month.

Singapore is famous for its local cuisine. There are plenty of Hawker centers that serve you Chinese,Malay,Korean and Indian foods. The cost of a meal would be $3 to $7.

Travelling around in Singapore is very cheap. The city has an excellent transportation system. It’s well connected by SMRT (metro rail transport), Buses and Taxi’s. You can travel around the SMRT and Buses by taking a Ez-link Card. Ez-link card can be obtained from any MRT stations by paying 15 SGD off which $5 is non refundable and it will have an initial value of 7. You can use the Ez-link card in buses also. Taxi’s are metered and cheaper. It will allow only 4 persons(3 back+1 front). During peak hours the taxi charges are a bit higher and it includes ERP gantry fares. Taxis are available round the clock.

In the next post i would cover the interesting places to see in Singapore.
