Security Categories in India

Posted by admin on 27th, 2007

I was reading an article in IBN live which says Taslima Nasrin has been given Y category security. It just made me sit and wonder what the hell is Y category security.  Im just scrapping out here the different security categories in India.

There are 4 levels of security categories in India. A particular individual is put into one category depending on the amount of threat he has for life from other persons.

The Four levels of Security category are:

  1. Z+ category has a security cover of 36 personnel.
  2. Z category has has a security cover of 22 personnel.
  3. Y category has a security cover of 11 personnel.
  4. X category has a security cover of 2 personnel.

Z+
It is the highest level of security provided in india with 36 persons protecting your life. It’s also kind of a status symbol of High end celebrities and politicians. Imagine the amount of cash spent on this.  Z plus category security is entitled for people under the “Very Very High threat” and the person is provided with a pilot car and escort vehicles. The 36 top personnel includes personal security officers, and guards at home and office.

The SPG (Special Protection Group), NSG (National Security Guards), ITBP (Indo-Tibetan Border Police) and CRPF (Central Reserve Police Force) are the agencies responsible for providing securities to VVIPs/VIPs/Politicians/ High-profile celebrities and sportspersons.

SPG commandos cater to the PM, former PMs and their immediate family members as part of the z+ category of security cover.

Z

The ‘z’ category, in turn, entails security cover by the Delhi police or the ITBF or CRPF personnel and one escort car.

Y

The ‘Y’ category encompasses two personal security officers (PSOs)

X‘ category, one PSOs.
